Many school leavers are attracted to the glamorous perception they have of becoming involved in events management as a viable career option. However, they are often not aware of the hard work involved in this business sector and imagine organising beautiful weddings, creative functions and other events as a simplistic affair. It is important for any prospective events management co-ordinator to be sure what is involved and the best place to start is to spend some time with a busy co-ordinator at a hotel and conference venue.
Hotel and conference co-ordinators are expected to fulfil a number of functions over and above the organisation of events to be held at the venue. To enable them to fulfil these functions they require creative skills as well as logical thinking in order to ensure that every detail is taken care of and that every function or event runs smoothly. You might be surprised to find out that the organisational skills are much more important for a hotel and conference co-ordinator than the creative aspect of arranging functions. This is because the co-ordinator will mainly organise conferences where there creative skills are not really required rather than weddings and other important occasions.
A hotel and conference co-ordinator will also require some form of qualification before they can successfully be employed in this competitive industry. There are many colleges, technikons and hotel schools that offer short to long term qualifications for event management. However, a qualification may not always be enough to land a position as a hotel and conference co-ordinator and some experience may be required to fulfil the job factors required by relevant employment providers. A good way to gain this experience is to work at a restaurant or hotel for the duration of your studies. You will need to start at the bottom as a waitress or receptionist to gain a feel of how the hotel and conference venue operates.
Although these positions may not give you experience in events management per se, you will be able to add this type of employment to your CV which will give you an edge over hotel and conference co-ordinator candidates with no experience. You will also have the benefit of already being employed by a hotel when you complete your studies and will be more likely to be considered for the position.
Alternatively, you can find out whether you can gain experience by working within the conferencing department of a large hotel. This will mean that you will need to fulfil tasks such as setting up conference rooms, equipment, etc for events planned by the conference co-ordinator. Try to choose larger or busier hotels to gain your experience as they will always have some type of conference or function planned when choosing this route to gain experience. Choosing well known hotels to take care of the experience part necessary to gain employment will also look better on your CV than working for smaller unknown establishments.
Remember to keep in mind an end date for working to gain experience in events management. If you don’t do this you may find yourself permanently employed in a position where you have no room to move up and succeed as a hotel and conference co-ordinator. At the end of this period, should you not have made the necessary step towards reaching your goals to become a hotel and conference co-ordinator you should look for alternative employment or consider starting out on your own.
