Bandwidth explained in layman terms is the transmission rate of data exchange in a specific channel. Think of a freeway. There can only be an X amount of vehicles on a specific free at a given time. To get more vehicles onto the road, some of the vehicles must exit the freeway.
If there is a bottleneck at one of the off-ramps or on-ramps you get traffic congestion. Too many cars on one freeway means slower moving traffic.
If for instance, many students in one lab and thus network try to access the same web page and download from it, the downloading may take a long time. That will be the case if the bandwidth allocation of the connection is exceeded or also when the bandwidth allowed for the specific web page by the Internet Service Provider is exceeded.
When one opens a web page, the data travels at a high speed to the Internet Service Provider (ISP). From the ISP, it is then transmitted to your computer. The information, however, travels at a specific speed and theoretically you should have no problem with getting the information at a lightning speed.
In practice however, what happens is that you are attempting to get the web page through a tiny hole, much like water draining through a drain hole. The water is there and it moves fast, but the hole is only so big and only so much water can pass through it at any given time.
If you want more water to drain faster you will need a bigger hole. Think about the traffic example – to get more cars onto the freeway some has to leave; the freeway must become wider, traffic less or no bottlenecks should exist. Bandwidth then determines how much information can be downloaded and uploaded through a specific connection at a given time.
If you have a dial-up account you will wait longer for information to be downloaded or uploaded, if you have ADSL line more bandwidth is allocated and the transmission is faster.
